Sixth Annual
Gil Thelen’s Sunshine Watch Gil Thelen, FSNE’s executive director, has made the digital leap and established a blog on Sunshine law and related First Amendment issues in Florida. He will post regularly during the 2007 legislative session on developments in Tallahassee. His aim is to inform editors and publishers and to provide context on pending issues. March 11, 2007 Because of the positive response from its public awareness campaign last year, the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors (FSNE) is conducting a sixth annual Sunshine Sunday event. Nationally, Sunshine Sunday has grown into Sunshine Week. The American Society of Newspaper Editors heard from Florida editors about the success of the event and is asking newspapers nationwide to raise awareness about open government and records access. This part of the fsne.org site is for FSNE members participating in Sunshine Sunday to post contributions for the use of other members. Please submit contributions, questions or comments to: sunshine2007@fsne.org. For more information, click here. Editorials

Crist, McCollum speak out for open government
Barbara Petersen, president of the First Amendment Foundation and a member of the board of directors of the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors (FSNE), recently conducted separate videotaped interviews in Tallahassee with Florida governor Charlie Crist and state attorney general Bill McCollum on the topic of open government as part of FSNE's Sunshine Sunday effort. We encourage all FSNE members to link from their Web sites to these videos as a way to promote Sunshine Sunday and Sunshine Week, and to give your readers a chance to hear directly from these state officials.
