Florida Society of News Editors Freelance Exchange FAQs
What is the FSNE.org/freelance?
Think of it as a matchmaking service. It’s a website designed to enable freelancers to find opportunities with news organizations in Florida, and for those news organizations to find skilled journalists to do that work.
I’m a freelance journalist. How much does it cost and what do I need to do?
There is no charge to use the Freelance Exchange. It’s free. Our goal is to help journalists find opportunities in these tough economic times. To participate, you will need to create profile on the website that includes your name, contact information, your experience, links to work samples and the what specialty areas should include your posting. Writer/Reporter? Editor? Video? Graphics?
Okay. I created a profile. If no one calls or emails me, how will I get an assignment?
There are two ways. Several Florida news organizations are posting freelance opportunities on the Exchange, which you can see by clicking on the Freelancers Needed tab. In addition, as a registered member of the exchange, you can subscribe to receive an email when a new freelance opportunity is posted.
I work for a news organization and I’m interested in finding journalists who can do occasional local news assignments in my area. How do I use the Exchange? Is there a fee?
Again, the Freelance Exchange is a free service. News organization representatives do need to register to post assignments, however. Once you have registered, you can publish assignments in the exchange that include a description of the work needed, the deadline, the skills sought and a pay range.
If I don’t have a specific assignment but am interested in talking to freelancers about working for me, what is the best way to do that?
You can search through listings posted by freelance journalists in a variety of categories – reporters, photographers, videographers, database specialists, graphic artists and other new media specialists. You also can register so you will receive an email whenever someone in a specific category posts a new listing on the Exchange.
Does FSNE take responsibility for the journalists or news organizations who post listings on the Exchange?
FSNE does not. We make the Exchange available as a tool to enable journalists and news organizations to find each other.
