FSNE Journalism Contest
(For work published in 2009)
Detailed instructions for submitting photo and design categories:
General:
Photo and design entries are to be uploaded this year to our online collaborative account on box.net. Details on collaborating there can be found here.
Each member's folder online contains folders named "Design" and "Photos."
Inside the Design folder are five folders, one for each category:
- 11. Page One
- 12. Feature Page (non-1A such as Features, Business, Local, Inside A)
- 13. Sports Page
- 14. Editorial Cartoon
- 15. Graphics
Inside the Photos folder are four folders, one for each category:
- 16. Spot News
- 17. Features
- 18. Sports
- 19. Photo Story
Note: Community journalists, not affiliated with a traditional news organization, will find one folder only -- for photos, category 20.
File format: Upload .JPGs only; no PDFs. Files must be scanned to 200 dpi or ppi. Horizontal images should be 10 inches wide by depth; vertical images should be 10 inches deep by width. Pages submitted in the design categories must be 10-12 inches wide by depth at 72 dpi or ppi.
File names: Naming the files correctly is critical. If files are misnamed, the judges will not see them.
Use a code showing the contest division, category, a code letter for the paper and a number to show how many entries are included.
For categories that allow multiple images in each entry, add a letter.
Photo entry examples:
Examples:
- A16-A-1.jpg = Division A, category 16, paper A, entry #1.
- B19-D-2a.jpg = Division B, category 19, paper D, first photo in entry #2.
- B19-D-2b.jpg = same as above, but second photo in entry #2. (use "c, d, etc." for multiple images of the entry.
- CJ20-1.jpg = Community journalist (not affiliated with a traditional news organization), category 20, entry #1.
Additional notes:
Captions may be included in the PhotoShop field before uploading. The caption MUST NOT identify the newspaper or the photographer.
The Photo Story category may be the work of a single photographer or a staff entry.
All entries received by deadline will be judged directly from the online file-sharing server. Again, it's critical that files be named properly to assure that the judges see all entries in that category.
The addition of "2a, 2b, etc." in the Photo Story category will permit judges to view the photos in the order you want. For community journalists, not affiliated with a traditional news organization, entries should be numbered "1a, 1b, etc.' for photo stories in category 20.
List of code letters for each paper is below.
The staffer, or staffers, must be named on the entry form. Do not identify the designer(s) on the entry file.
If you have a question about submitting pages, please email Cory Lancaster: cory.lancaster@news-jrnl.com
How to upload entries
Choose yourself or someone else on your staff who is familiar with online file sharing to be responsible for uploading entries. You may choose a different person for design and photo categories, if you like.
Submit a request for invitation to contest@fsne.org with the subject "box request" and the email address for the person(s) to be invited as the body. Up to two email addresses can be submitted; they must be on your organization's internet domain (no gmail, aol, yahoo or other accounts.)
To join box.net, you only need to supply the email address on the invitation, and your name. You will supply your own password.
Upon joining, your organization's folder will automatically be visible in your box.net account. You (and anyone else in your organization who received an invitation) will have full editing rights, so be sure you fully trust anyone for whom you request an invitation.
Design entry examples:
- A11-A-1a.jpg = Division A, category 11, paper A, first page in entry #1.
- A11-A-1b.jpg = Division A, category 11, paper A, second page in entry #1.
- (use "c, d, etc." for multiple images of the entry.
- B12-D-2a.jpg = Division B, category 12, paper D, first page of entry #2.
- C13-D-3b.jpg = Division C, category 13, paper D, second page of entry #3.
Additional notes:
All files must be saved as JPGs - not PDFs. Each file should be 10-12 inches wide by depth at 72 dpi or ppi.
The 1A category may be the work of a single designer or a staff entry.
Again, it's critical that files be named properly to assure that the judges see all entries in that category.
List of code letters for each paper is below.
The 1A category allows up to 5 pages per entry, and three of them are mandatory dates. (See categories note for description.) The other categories allow only 3. Judges will discard any additional pages.
